Goats Have Come A Long Way Down Centuries From The Hills Of West Asia And Europe

Goats are probably the oldest species to be domesticated. They have been prized by all civilizations for their milk and meat. They provide considerable quantities and good quality of hides to be used in different walks of life. A survey conducted in 2011 puts the total number of goats in the world to be 924 million.

The female member of the species are called 'does' or 'nannies'. Male members are often referred to as 'bucks' or 'billies' or 'rams'. They can well be traced to the hills of west Asia and Eastern Europe. They grazed on the hillsides of Europe and plains of Asia before they spread over to the rest of the world.

Goats have found their way into our homes in the form of our dinners, or foot mats or milk since time immemorial. Goats also help in carrying heavy weighted objects in some countries.

A rare species of goat found in the US, called fainting goat, feigns to have faint when it senses danger. It gets up soon after and continues grazing once the danger is gone.

Goats usually have a pair of horns made of keratin on their head. They are employed by male members of the species to defend itself against predators and other dominant male members of the goat family.

Although goats love life in the plains with a barren area, there are some species who would prefer living in the rocky edges of a mountain. These goats have adapted themselves to the rocky and stony surroundings. It can get along quite well there.

There are several predators looking for goats. The list includes lions, tigers, leopards and, of course, humans. Goats are reared in special farms in South America for the sake of their meat and skin.
