Crocodiles are large reptiles that live in Asia, the Americas, Africa and Australia. It is important to know that, alligators, gharial and crocodiles belong to separate biological families. Crocodiles are semi-aquatic animals, and they live in habitats with rivers, wetlands and lakes. They are carnivorous animals, and they usually eat birds, reptiles, fish and mammals. Crocodiles may look very slow, but they can have a short energy boost, that provide them fast attack that lasts several seconds. This is used for their hunting! In most cases, they wait under the water surface, for other animals come to drink water. When they approach close enough, crocodile attacks. Every young crocodile must learn this hunting technique. At first, many attempts end with failure!

The size of crocodiles varies between species. Members of the Osteolaemus can have size of 1.5-1.9 m. Saltwater crocodiles are much bigger. They can be more than 7 meters long and have a weight of 1.000 kg. They live in South-east Asia, northern Australia and eastern India. There are several more species that can reach over 5 meters and have a weight more than 900 kg. All crocodiles start their lives with a size of only 20 cm, but males grow much faster than females.

Crocodiles can replace their teeth up to 50 times during their life span, which can be from 35 up to 75 years. Their senses are very good, especially vision. This allows them to hunt at night. Crocodiles are hunted for their skin. It is usually used in the fashion industry for making shoes, bags and belts. There are several crocodile farms in the world. There, crocodiles are bred for their skin!
