Are Zoos Humane?

Are Zoos Humane?

Attention has been brought to zoos in the humane treatment of their animals. Many people are asking if it is humane at all to keep animals in enclosed habitats where they are unable to act in a natural manner. It is also known that zoos are for human entertainment and profits. Not necessarily for the preservation of animals.

It is important to remember that zoos are a great educational tool for people of all ages. They get to see something that they normally wouldn’t. A chance to study and learn up close. Brining exotic animals to one location to spark imagination in the eyes of children so that maybe they can grow up to appreciate these animals too.

However, animals need to be in their own environments as much as people do. A big polar bear for instance is way out of its natural habitat in a zoo. Is the polar bear thriving being in a zoo? Would it survive if it ever went back to nature? Would it have lost all its ability to hunt and survive on its own?

Zoos have provided means for the masses to see spectacular animals they never would have otherwise. They have let people experience and get to know these animals in ways that help them understand what amazing creatures they are. Keeping our zoos for education and discovery is very important. What’s most likely important now is to find a way to let the animals be self-sufficient again without human interference.
