Are Animals Becoming Addicted to Junk Food

Humans and junk food these days go hand in hand. We know we are what we eat. We know that we have the conscious choice of what we eat and when. With so many of us going through the drive through, tossing our uneaten portions out the window and generally leaving junk food everywhere, what are the chances that wildlife is following suit in our cities?

Pretty good chances, actually. Humans make up cities. Bad human habits make up the habitat we live in. Because humans have created their concreate jungle in replacement to the natural ones, animals of all species have had to adapt their lifestyles to ours. We took away their natural shelter and food sources and replaced them with our substitutes.

In cities, animals have to scavenge to find their next meal and that is often what we throw out and discard. It makes sense that their diet will now mainly consist of refined sugars, fatty foods and high carbs just like people. Nasty habits aren’t just confined to the human species, but to all species that have to learn to adapt. Alley cats, stray dogs, pigeons, even insects like ants and cockroaches are all relying on the discards of our waste for their food source. This in turn takes away their natural abilities to hunt. As long as there are cities or human population, there will be animals that depend on us as we depend on them.
