Animal Testing and Views of Cruelty

Animal Testing and Views of Cruelty

An all too hot issue in the United States revolves around animal testing. The pros and cons surrounding the topic on both sides have people arguing over the ethical treatment and the potential benefits of testing on animals versus other methods of testing.

Animals are used around the country in testing facilities. These testing facilities are using various types and breeds of animals to test human consumption products such as everyday toiletries, house hold cleaners, medicines, cosmetics and food or supplement products. These facilities are mandated by the Animal Welfare Act of 1966 along with funded facilities of the US Public Health Service to provide the animals covered in the AWA proper housing, veterinary care and basic needs.

Many people argue that this measure is not enough to ensure the safety and welfare of all animals. While the AWA regulates care for warm-blooded animals, it does not help species such as birds, mice, rats or cold-blooded animals nor does it regulate any type of testing.

Historically, animal testing was the only way to practice and develop new medical methods and medical understanding. However, with the advancement of medical technologies activists argue that there are many other ways to use the new technologies for everyday consumer products than to use animals. Animals are seen as living, breathing, feeling beings to activists. They feel that subjecting them to harmful experiments is cruel.

Living tissue can now be created in labs for far cheaper that using animals. The growing movement of activists also argue that these tissue samples will provide a surplus in revenue, greater protection for all animals and provide more reliable results for human use.
