African elephant faces poaching despite London accord

The continent of Africa is known for its rich natural resources, great diversity in flora and fauna. But today the Africa is on the verge of losing its rich biodiversity due to illegal poaching and trading of the animals. Despite 46 African countries assured to control illegal ivory trade in the continents, the elephant killing remains constant in the Africa.

In a press conference in Botswana, the UN body official informed that the rate of poaching is far greater than the population growth of elephants in the Africa.

According to the data, by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), around 20,000 elephants lost their lives in 2013 for ivory.The study of dead bodies of the animals also revealed that more than 60 percent were killed by the poachers.

On being asked about the agreement signed by 46 countries about the illegal wildlife trade, wildlife experts said that the effectiveness of the declaration will visible in the long term as complex problem like this have no quick solutions.

China, which is one of the largest market for illegal ivory has initiated ‘demand reduction’ programs.  Some African countries have imposed strict anti-poaching legislations, according to the Chief Adviser Heather Sohl from WWF-UK.

The 2011 was the continent worsts year in terms of poaching, the numbers have been declining since then. Many anti-poaching groups are recognizing the slow change in the system. The conditions are better in the east Africa , but constantly getting worse in the central and west Africa in terms of illegal poaching.
