Having a snake as a pet

Having a snake as a pet

Snakes are very interesting creatures. Many people like them, and want to have them at home as their pets. If you are one of them, there are several things you must know. Some snakes may live more than 20 years, so this is a long-term commitment. You must feed a snake with prey animals. This means you will have to devote a space in your freezer for snake’s food! Because all snakes are experts for escaping, you must have an escape-proof tank. Don’t buy some cheap or used or you can end with a free snake in your home.

If you are a beginner, you should choose some of: Corn Snakes, Ball Pythons or King and Milk Snakes for your first pet. They are easy to care for and they are reasonably sized. You must avoid large snakes and venomous snakes. This means, you shouldn’t bring home: Boa constrictors, Burmese pythons, Tree boas or pythons, Green snakes or Water Snakes. Other species that are very dangerous and shouldn’t be kept at home are: Anacondas, Reticulated pythons and any venomous snakes.

It is recommended to feed your pet with a pre-killed prey, because a live rodent may injure the snake. Snakes control their body temperature by moving in warmer and cooler areas. This means you must provide a warmer a cooler part of the cage. The right body temperature is important so the snake can digest food. If you are worried, because you cannot determine is your snake a male or female, don’t worry. You will need a professional who can determine this. If your snake escape, remember that they like warm places, so look for them in warmer areas.
