What is Kennel Cough in Dogs - Prevention and Cure

Kennel cough is a condition in dogs characterized by a number of symptoms like liquid nasal discharge, continuous coughing, and retching. Illness, eye discharge, runny nose, and discomfort in many other forms are also evident in dogs with kennel cough.

Kennel cough is an infectious canine tracheobronchitis. It is brought about by the trachea and bronchi inflammation. This condition happens to dogs from all over the world. Studies also confirm that every dog will go through the phase of having to suffer from this condition once in its lifetime.

Several factors can cause kennel cough and among the most common are stress, cold temperature, dust, cigarette smoke exposure, and the absence of fresh air circulation in the dog's shelter.

It is hard to prevent a dog from acquiring kennel cough. It can be transmitted to a healthy pet by simply breathing the same air that one with the disease breathes. There are a number of culprits that can actually make a dog infected which are totally beyond your control. There is actually a vaccine which is said to be effective in keeping the dog safe from getting kennel cough. However, this has not been proven to ward off all the causes of the said disease. The least that pet owners can do is to keep their dogs away from other animals. Although this is quite difficult to achieve, this sacrifice can lessen the dog's chances of being infected.

The treatment for kennel cough varies. It is dependent on the case of the infected pet. Some dogs are capable to going through it without having to undergo medication. If the origin of the disease is bacteria, the veterinarian will prescribe an antibiotic. In most cases, cough suppressants are used to ward off the discomforts.
